Volendo verificare l’affidabilità dei risultati di una visita medica, solitamente si controllano due tipi di affidabilità, quella interosservatore (indice di precisione con la quale diversi operatori indipendenti raggiungono la medesima conclusione) e quella intraosservatore. Sebbene l’affidabilità interosservatore abbia una maggiore rilevanza clinica rispetto alla affidabilità intraosservatore, una precisa verifica dell’affidabilità intraosservatore costituisce un passo propedeutico nella valutazione delle sottili capacità palpatorie, prima di passare alla verifica dell’affidabilità interosservatore.
