All’interno di questa ricerca, viene proposto un modello della disfunzione somatica, originariamente denominato “lesione osteopatica” secondo il quale le restrizioni nella mobilità e le variazioni autonome, viscerali e immunologiche sono prodotte dai neuroni sensoriali sensibili al dolore e dai loro riflessi. È noto che, quando il tessuto muscoloscheletrico o viscerale subisce uno stress o una lesione, i nocicettori producono contratture di difesa muscolare e l’attivazione autonoma. I riflessi autonomi nocicettivi, inoltre, provocano delle alterazioni nelle funzioni viscerali e immunologiche. Infine, mantenere i muscoli, le articolazioni e i tessuti a essi correlati in una posizione anomala di difesa, causa l’alterazione dei tessuti connettivi, rinforzando così la posizione anomala. Tale modello, rappresenta un’evoluzione del modello neurologico di Korr, sottolineando tuttavia il fatto che il nocicettore e i suoi riflessi costituiscono una fonte delle alterazioni circolatorie, viscerali, immunologiche e del tessuto connettivo che si osservano nella disfunzione somatica.
